The increase in number and grade of devastation of disasters in the last years, bring into focus the importance that logistics has in the alleviation of suffering and reconstruction of societies. For the next 50 years natural and man-made disasters will increase five–fold. (Thomas and Kopzak, 2007). The logistic costs of relief operations are estimated to be as high as 80 % of the total costs of disaster relief. (Van Wassenhove, 2006). Humanitarian Logistics is the "process of planning, implementing and controlling the efficient, cost–effective flow and storage of goods and materials, as well as related information, from the point of origin to the point of consumption for the purpose of alleviating the suffering of vulnerable people." Humanitarian Logistics generates information that helps to better prepare for future disasters.
