Over the past few years there has been an ever-increasing interest in Procurement and Supply Chain Management. Professionals have come to realize that procurement in general and supplier relationships in particular, represent a critical element of the Supply Chain. The business chain is as weak as its weakest link. One of the most important links in the business chain is the Procurement and supply function. As a result of the implementation of improvement programmes in Engineering, manufacturing and logistics management, many companies feel the need to improve relationship with suppliers. These relationships should result in lead–time reduction in new product developments, and just in time delivery and zero defects on components. Moving away from traditional, operating roles, procurement managers are assuming more strategic roles in their organizations focusing on getting better performance from suppliers and the active management of supplier relationship.
