Premise: One of the national development objectives of the Federal Government of Nigeria is food security. However, this has not been achieved. For example, the annual consumption of meat and eggs per capita for Nigeria is 8.1 kg and 3.5 kg respectively. These figures are lower than the world average of 37.9 kg and 8.0 kg respectively (FAO, 2007). It is therefore, necessary to give impetus to livestock production to enhance consumption. Presently, there are potentials for the expansion and development of the livestock sub-sector. These potentials, if exploited, will contribute immensely to the attainment of Millennium Development Goal one which is eradication of extreme poverty and hunger.

Objectives: This workshop is therefore, designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed for the development and management of the livestock sub-sector. At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Assess the performance of the livestock sub-sector;
  • Identify the major problems facing the livestock sub-sector;
  • Draw up implementation strategies for livestock development plan; and
  • List the skills needed to manage livestock development programmes.
