This course prepares delegates for the NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management, a qualification for those with fire safety responsibilities in the workplace. It is already established as a popular qualification, with more than 6,000 delegates around the world having already achieved the qualification.

Holders of the National Fire Certificate are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Technician Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH.

Who Should Attend?

Managers and supervisory staff members who need to ensure that their organisations meet their responsibilities under fire safety legislation. The course equips participants to carry out fire risk assessments in their workplaces and identify the range of fire protective and preventative measures required. It is also suitable for people moving into fire safety adviser roles.

Course Outcomes

This course covers the management of health and safety – particularly fire safety – including legal requirements. It also includes principles of fire and explosion, causes and prevention of fires, fire protection in buildings and ensuring the safety of people in the event of fire.

The content equips delegates to undertake fire risk assessments in a variety of workplaces. The syllabus is mapped to both the National Occupational Standards for Health and Safety owned by ENTO and the Fire Safety NOS owned by SkillsPlus.

No previous health and safety or fire safety knowledge is required, although it should be noted that the assessment includes a requirement to write a short report.

The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately:

  • Management of international health and safety (IGC1)*
  • Fire safety and risk-management (FC1)
  • Practical fire risk assessment (FC2)

* Delegates who have already passed IGC1 or NGC1 as part of a previous NEBOSH qualification do not need to retake it if the certifications were achieved within the last five years. If achieved more than five years ago, delegates may re-sit the examination without needing to re-attend the course.
