This is an intensive learning experience meant for talented teenagers in the age bracket 13-20 years. It has been designed to help them become self-aware, so they can identify and pursue careers in line with their potentials and legitimate interests. Beneficiaries of the programme will have the opportunity to learn from distinguished academics from Finland, political leaders, and exemplary industry captains some of whom will become their mentors.
They will be positioned and developed for leadership positions within democratic institutions in Nigeria and the nation’s socio-economic ecosystem. International best practice will be observed in the deployment of the programme which will cater for 3,000 teenagers who will be prepared to become internationally competitive and lead their peers in the effort to make youths one of the major groups promoting the economy of Nigeria. The programme is meant to help young people learn the tenets of democracy and show interest in participating actively in nurturing and making it work to the advantage of society. It is also an effort being made by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (Lagos Chapter) to promote orderly transition of political leadership from one generation to the other.
The first three days of the programme will offer the beneficiaries the opportunity to learn how to learn efficiently and effectively and acquire critical and analytical thinking skills as well as understand democratic processes and how to create ideas and products that can guarantee them financial security in a fast-changing world. The last day of the programme will offer them the opportunity to make group presentations that focus on resolving real life problems in Nigeria which can be scaled up for global impact.
Three hours of that day will be devoted to conducting a model assembly guided by the principal officers of State and Federal Legislatures but presided over by one of the programme participants who will emerge through an election where all the 3,000 participants will be voters. The participant who will emerge victorious in the election will become the Model Lagos Assembly Speaker (MLAS), 2018. The MLAS will get a certificate, and a plaque and become the official representative and spokesperson of Teenagers in Lagos State.
Relevant legislatures will consult the MLAS periodically for teenagers’ input to relevant House deliberations. Further leadership training both within and outside Nigeria will be offered the MLAS and the other Model Lagos Assembly officers who will also be chosen through a democratic election.
Those other officers will include Deputy Speaker, Majority Leader, Minority Leader, Committee Chairmen, and Clerk of the House. Peter Ogudoro, PhD (in Education and Career Management from the University of Reading, England) will serve as Programme Director. The programme is an integral part of the Nigerian Schools Enhancement Project.
