The culture of safety management in an organization is championed by senior managers and the senior executives. It is an established fact that ‘Good Safety Systems = Good Business’. A safe workplace begins with employee awareness of situations that can cause accidents and injury. For an organization to operate safely and achieving a good return on investment; such organization should develop an effective health, safety and environment management system in the workplace.
Managers and the senior Executives are exposed to occupational ill- health due to some unsafe conditions and practices in the workplace. Managers are exposed to long hours of sitting for meetings, use of the computers to mention but a few; these practices have their negative health impact. Ergonomics affects people and causing serious occupational disorders. Stress is another factor in the workplace killing people silently and the number of hypertensive patients is rising on daily basis due to the excessive exposure to high level of stress in the workplace.
Recently, on the dailies a Senior Executive Officer expressed how he almost died as a result of stress in the workplace. This is still happening and will continue to be there because there is always stress in the workplace.
In addition, when occupational stress is not managed very well and is taken home it leads to transfer aggression and leads to misunderstanding between couples and when not controlled can lead to divorce. But a good understanding of stress is very vital to its control; and this is the subject of this workshop. Stress is a silent killer. A good safety culture should be in place to ensure business excellence.
