Gender and social relations within and between different groups of people are critical to people’s wellbeing and to the processes by which people’s well-being changes. They are both critical determinants of people’s ability to influence, participate in and benefit from social, economic, and material change, as well as intrinsic to people’s sense of identity.

This program gender, poverty and social development is enriching from both an analytical and a practical perspective. It investigates current thinking and concerns relating to the practice of social development, poverty reduction and the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment and describes tools and frameworks to inform policy making and practice.

Among the biggest challenges facing the global community today are the eradication of poverty and inequality, and the needs of social development. This course introduces participants to the concept of poverty reduction, the culture of poverty, the causes of poverty and its effects. Intersections between poverty and health, human rights and education will be explored in a variety of international contexts. Policies designed to reduce poverty will be analyzed at both the global or international level and from community perspectives. The course also introduces social development, with emphasis on understanding and planning for socially sensitive development.
