Education and Training in the aviation and maritime industry in Nigeria was driven mainly by two critical interventions by the Nigerian government.

First, was the establishment of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron in 1979. Originally, called the Nautical college of Nigeria. The academy was set up to educate and train shipboard officers and shore-based management personnel. In 1988 the college’s mandate was expanded to training all levels and categories of personnel for all facets of the Nigeria maritime industry. By the end of 2013, the Academy had trained about 8,300 merchant Navy officers and more than 68,000 other workers in marine engineering, nautical science, maritime transport and business studies, ship building, port operation, marine insurance, maritime law, maritime security, and other specialized maritime courses.

Second, was the establishment of The Nigerian College of Aviation Technology in Zaria in 1964. The college was charged with the responsibility of training Pilots, Air Traffic Controllers, Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, Aeronautical Telecommunications Engineers, Cabin Crew, Flight Dispatchers, and several other aviation professionals. The declared mission of the college was to consistently provide the aviation industry with professionals and other personnel through training and related services for safe transportation in accordance with international standards.

Today, training in the aviation and maritime industry in Nigeria is being caried out by the graduates of these two institutions (and others that have risen along the line), along with professionals with international qualifications, under the watchful eyes and guidance of local and international regulators and certifying bodies like the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency {NIMASA}, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and a few other local and international bodies and agencies.
