The strengthening of procurement and supply management processes especially in the public sector is considered a key component of an integrated strategy to ensure operational systems that meet international standards in quality, safety and efficacy. Four strategic lines of action are emphasized in this workshop:

• Promotion of coherent policy to ensure a greater level of competition in markets
• Implementation of cost containment strategies focusing on issues relating to pricing and intellectual property regulation
• Strengthening of supply systems to ensure continuous availability and affordability of essential goods and services
• Consolidation of mechanisms for joint price negotiations and pooled procurement.
