NST Weekly L&D Digest November 2–6, 2026 Edition
Posted: 2 days ago
Welcome to Another Edition of the NST Weekly L&D Digest!
The theme for this week's edition is "Strengthening Responsibility, Improving Performance".
As the year moves towards its close, November provides an important opportunity to examine the results of our professional and organisational efforts. Strategies have been implemented, targets pursued, and responsibilities undertaken, but how much progress has actually been achieved? For professionals, this means looking beyond completed tasks to assess personal contributions, identify capability gaps, and determine where improvement is needed. For organisational leaders, it means examining performance, reviewing existing strategies, evaluating risks, and making decisions based on evidence rather than assumptions.
Assessment is an important part of continuous improvement. It helps organisations understand what is working, recognise areas of weakness, and determine whether their resources and activities are producing the intended results. As we begin November, this week's focus is on moving beyond execution to evaluate outcomes, strengthen professional responsibility, and make informed adjustments that will improve future performance.
Execution creates activity. Assessment reveals progress. Improvement turns results into lasting value.
This Week on Nigerian Seminars and Trainings
This week, our posts explored the importance of evaluating performance, strengthening organisational responsibility, and making informed decisions as the year approaches its close.
We began with our November welcome message, From Execution to Assessment, encouraging professionals and organisations to reflect on their achievements, examine their results, and identify the adjustments needed before the next business cycle. This was followed by Measure What Your Efforts Produce, which challenged professionals to look beyond busyness and consider whether their daily activities are generating meaningful value.
Our Health, Safety and Environment Management insight examined why workplace safety requires more than regulatory compliance. It highlighted the importance of leadership commitment, proactive risk management, workforce competence, and continuous improvement in building safer and more resilient organisations.
Through the Management Challenge, we invited professionals to test their management judgement, evaluate difficult workplace situations, and consider how their decisions compare with those of other professionals.
Finally, our Legal and Legislative Leadership insight explored the responsibilities of legal and legislative leaders in shaping organisational policies, interpreting regulatory developments, strengthening accountability, and ensuring that institutional decisions align with legal requirements and strategic objectives.
From individual productivity to organisational safety and legal responsibility, this week's message is clear: effective performance requires regular assessment, sound judgement, and the willingness to improve.
Quote of the Week
“What gets measured gets managed.”
- Peter Drucker
Performance assessment provides organisations with an opportunity to understand whether their activities are producing the intended results. Without meaningful evaluation, it becomes difficult to identify performance gaps, recognise effective practices, or determine where improvements are necessary. For professionals, assessing performance means looking beyond completed tasks to examine the value created by their contributions. For organisational leaders, it involves reviewing results, evaluating strategies, and using reliable information to guide decisions.
Professional Takeaway
Make performance assessment part of your regular professional practice. Evaluate your results, identify what needs improvement, and use the lessons gained to make better decisions.
Featured Article: Measuring the Real Value of Professional Work
Being busy does not always mean being productive. Completing tasks, attending meetings and meeting deadlines are important, but they do not automatically translate into meaningful professional contributions. What matters is the value those activities create and how they support individual and organisational goals.
Our featured article, “Measuring the Real Value of Professional Work,” explores why professionals must look beyond completed tasks to assess actual outcomes. It examines the importance of measuring results, taking ownership of responsibilities, using feedback to improve performance, aligning professional development with workplace needs and making performance assessment a continuous practice. For professionals seeking to improve their effectiveness, the key is to understand not just what they do, but the difference their work makes. Nigeria's Learning & Development Ecosystem Round-Up: Moving from Skills Assessment into Action
The connection between workforce skills, industry requirements, and practical workplace performance continues to receive attention across Nigeria.
On November 3, 2026, the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) held its second National Sector Skills Councils' Meeting in Abuja under the theme “From Assessment to Action: Advancing the Transition to Industry-Led and Sustainable Sector Skills Councils.” The meeting focused on strengthening the relevance, governance, industry participation, and sustainability of Sector Skills Councils. Discussions emphasised the need for employers and industry associations to define skills priorities, shape occupational standards, support workplace learning, and contribute to sustainable skills development. The ITF also stressed that assessment should lead to clear responsibilities, measurable milestones, and practical actions. Read the ITF meeting report.
Another development was reported on November 6, 2026, when the Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association (NECA) announced that it had trained more than 100 young Nigerians in advanced digital skills through its ICT Academy. The training covered artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analysis, Python programming, and 3D animation. The programme highlighted the importance of practical skills, mentorship, continuous learning, and collaboration between employers, government, and training institutions in preparing people for changing labour market demands. Read the NECA training report.
What This Means for Professionals and Organisations
These developments reinforce an important principle: skills development must respond to actual workforce and industry needs. Training should not end with attendance or certification; its value should also be assessed through improved competence, workplace application, productivity, and the ability to address practical challenges. For organisations, this means identifying capability gaps before selecting training interventions and evaluating what employees can do differently after learning. For professionals, it means remaining open to new knowledge, developing relevant competencies, and demonstrating how learning improves the quality of their work.
As we move from execution to assessment, the priority is to ensure that learning investments produce visible and measurable improvements.
Our Take: Don't Confuse Activity with Achievement
Completing tasks, meeting deadlines, and implementing plans are important aspects of professional and organisational life. However, these activities do not always tell the full story of performance. A project may be completed without achieving its intended objectives. A training programme may be delivered without producing noticeable improvements in employee competence. A workplace policy may be implemented without changing the behaviour it was designed to address. This is why assessment matters. Professionals should regularly examine the value their contributions create, while managers and executives should evaluate whether organisational activities are producing the intended outcomes. Start by reviewing one responsibility, project, or process. What was expected? What was achieved? What worked well? What needs to change? The answers provide a more useful basis for improvement than simply counting completed activities.
Do not settle for completing the work. Understand what the work has achieved and what can be done better.
Conclusion: Assess Your Results. Improve Your Next Steps.
Our November theme, From Execution to Assessment, reminds us that progress requires more than putting plans into action. It requires examining results, recognising gaps, and using evidence to determine what should happen next. This week, we explored how professionals can measure the value of their efforts, how leaders can strengthen workplace safety and legal responsibility, and why sound management decisions require thoughtful evaluation. As you continue through November, take time to review your achievements, assess your professional contributions, and identify where improvement is necessary. Ensure that your decisions are informed by results and that your development efforts address real capability needs.
Execution moves work forward. Assessment provides direction for improvement. Consistent improvement strengthens performance.
