When the Moment Calls, Be Ready
There are moments in every professional journey when opportunity does not knock politely; it arrives at speed. It may come disguised as a difficult assignment, an unfamiliar responsibility, a demanding transition, a timely connection or an invitation to step beyond what is comfortable. In such moments, opportunity rarely waits for certainty. It responds to readiness, courage and decisive action.
This is the deeper meaning of “Calling the Mare”. The mare represents the strength, momentum and possibility already within reach; the call is the deliberate act of summoning those resources when the moment demands them. But calling the mare is not enough. We must be prepared to take the reins; to recognise what is before us, move with purpose and direct our energy towards meaningful results.
Too often, professionals wait to feel completely qualified, perfectly positioned or entirely free of doubt before acting. Yet growth often begins at the precise point where certainty ends and initiative begins. Readiness is not the absence of hesitation; it is the capacity to respond with clarity and conviction despite it.
This week, we invite you to look again at the responsibilities, relationships, challenges and possibilities around you. One of them may be carrying the opportunity you have been waiting for. When your moment calls, will you merely hear; or will you call the mare, take the reins and ride?
Welcome to this week’s NST Weekly Learning and Development Digest.
This Week on Nigerian Seminars and Trainings
This week, we move from recognising opportunity to converting it into purposeful action. We begin by answering opportunities that may arrive without a formal invitation, then turn our attention to making every effort count, preserving the habits and practices that already deliver results, harvesting what remains possible before the year ends, and finishing with clear intention. Together, these reflections offer a practical pathway from possibility to progress; because opportunity alone does not determine outcomes; what matters is whether we are prepared to recognise it, take the reins and act. The mare is within calling distance; but are you ready to ride towards the result you say you want?

Quote of the Week
“In every area of effectiveness within an organization, one feeds the opportunities and starves the problems”- Peter F. Drucker
Drucker's insight encourages us to focus our time, energy and skills on possibilities that can create meaningful results rather than allowing challenges, distractions or missed opportunities to consume our attention.
What you give your attention and effort can determine what you are able to achieve. Feed the opportunities that can move you forward.
Featured Article - Beyond the Comfort Zone
Opportunities don't always come in the form we expect. Sometimes, they are hidden in the responsibilities we are given, the challenges we face, or the moments that push us beyond what feels familiar.
But recognising an opportunity is only the first step. Being prepared and willing to respond when it comes is what can turn a possibility into progress.
Our featured article this week explores why capable professionals sometimes overlook opportunities they are already qualified for, how comfort can limit career growth, and why preparation matters before the next opportunity arrives.

L&D Ecosystem Round-Up
Nigeria's Learning and Development ecosystem keeps showing strong momentum, with organisations and professional bodies placing greater emphasis on digital transformation, leadership development, analytics, organisational agility and future-ready skills.
Across the wider training space, programmes are also addressing AI, digital HR, workforce planning, talent analytics, succession planning, leadership, change management and employee experience; areas that increasingly influence how organisations prepare their people for the future.
The message is clear: learning and development is no longer simply about attending training. It is increasingly about building capabilities that help professionals and organisations remain relevant, adaptable and effective.
Our Take
The most valuable opportunity in today's L&D environment may not necessarily be the next course or conference you attend. It may be the opportunity to identify what you need to learn next and act before the need becomes urgent.
As professionals, we cannot afford to wait until change forces us to respond. The workplace is evolving, technology is reshaping roles, and organisations are demanding new combinations of technical, strategic and human skills.
The professionals who will thrive are those who keep learning before they are forced to catch up.
And that brings us back to our theme this month: Calling the Mare.
The call may come as a new technology, a new responsibility, a new skill requirement, a difficult challenge or an unexpected opportunity. The important thing is to recognise it and be prepared to answer.
Conclusion
Keep Learning. Keep Moving. Keep Growing.
As this week's edition comes to a close, remember that professional growth is not built in one major moment. It is built through the choices you make consistently, what you learn, what you apply, what you improve and what you are willing to step forward and take responsibility for.
- There is still time to learn something new.
- There is still time to strengthen your skills.
- There is still time to pursue an opportunity.
- There is still time to make a meaningful difference.
Don't wait for the perfect moment. Pay attention to the opportunities already around you. When the mare calls, be prepared to answer.
Call the Mare.
Seize the opportunity. Grow with purpose. Finish strong.
Until Next Week... all the best!
