The Centre for Management Development was commissioned by Ford Foundation to develop a management development programme for the good governance of Nigerian Universities in 2004. In developing the programme, the Centre reached out to the country’s universities, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Committee of Vice Chancellors (CVCs), who are critical stakeholders in university governance. The programme on good governance was developed against the value orientation that Nigerian universities play a critical role in the nation’s development process. The programme was also developed in response to the critical challenges facing Nigerian universities, which in our view include fear of declining standards, inadequate funding, high level of conflict, unethical behaviour and the need to develop curricula that will respond more sensitively to the social and economic needs of the nation. Eight Nigerian universities drawn from the six geo- political zones of the country benefited from the programme which took place between August 2004 and June 2007. The beneficiaries were Deans of Faculties and Provosts of Colleges of the selected universities. The programme was also attended by Principal Officers and Administrators in the universities. The programme was well received by the participants. As a sequel to this intervention, the Centre hereby presents the programme to all public and private universities in the country as a rallying point for critical examination of the challenges facing the universities. The programme is invaluable for capacity and institution building in leadership and governance
