Poor housekeeping is a major challenge in some manufacturing companies. Poor housekeeping causes industrial accidents and the knowledge of good housekeeping habit is key to the prevention of accidents/incidents in the workplace. To ensure good housekeeping culture and that organizations improve on their safety performance the Japanese developed 5S principles of housekeeping habits.
5S is the name of a workplace organization method that uses a list of five Japanese words: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke. Transliterated or translated into English as Sort, Systematic Arrangement, Spic and Span, Standardize, and Sustain. The list describes how to organize a work space for efficiency and effectiveness by identifying and storing the items used, maintaining the area and items, and sustaining the new order. The decision-making process usually comes from a dialogue about standardization, which builds understanding among employees of how they should do the work to ensure safety and performance improvement.
At the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- list the importance of 5S principles of housekeeping;
- list the 5S Principles of good housekeeping; and
- sustain the 5S process.
