Introduction

Monitoring and controlling a project are the proactive way to find issues ahead of time to take corrective action. In this workshop we will cover the how-to of collecting measures of project performance, analysing them to forecast the need for corrective action, disseminating performance information, and managing the change across one or multiple projects. Using realistic project scenarios, you will apply the monitoring techniques and learn to make informed and fact-based decisions derived from project controls.

The workshop will define scope, schedule, quality, and cost measures in order to align with executive management expectations. It will also explore Earned Value Management and other established techniques designed to bring the project back in line with project objectives and constraints, all with the objective of improving current and future execution and avoiding known performance problems.

The monitoring and controlling phase in project management is a set of actions taken to make sure that a project is completed successfully with the least amount of difficulty as possible. In a general sense, monitoring involves evaluating the progress towards meeting the project's end goals and ensuring that no problems occur during the project's timeline.

If any problems occur, controlling involves implementing corrective actions to minimize or eliminate delays in the project's schedule. The corrective action process involves determining a resolution for the risk or problem, recommending the corrective action, and submitting a change request for the new process or action. The monitoring and controlling phase of a project occurs after the planning phase in conjunction with the execution phase.

Course feature

Objectives

This Managing Project Control training course will enable delegates to appreciate the concept of project control through well-structured project management governance and to improve their ability to control their projects by learning how to apply effectively project management techniques.

At the end of this Project Monitoring and Control training course, participant will learn to:

  • Propose the use of either adaptive or predictive approaches depending upon the project environment.
  • Work within effective project governance structures to control the appropriate involvement of senior management when needed to ensure project success.
  • Avoid waste (and potential failure) by controlling the expectations and understanding of key stakeholders (customer, sponsor, team) in regard to project objectives and required outcomes.
  • Develop key baseline plans that can be used to control project progress.
  • Control project execution by using standard monitoring and change management practices.

Training Methodology

The facilitator will introduce each of the core topics using a lecture format. Presentations are supported by reinforcement exercises to emphasize the application of theory in real-world project settings. This Project Monitoring and Control training course commences with an overview of the nature of projects and the fundamentals of project management. This enables delegates to reflect on how a project management framework supports effective control processes.

The early sections of the training course explain how to establish the work to be done and use this information to develop a comprehensive plan that guides different aspects of this work. Various techniques on how to control detailed planning of scope, schedule, cost and risk are introduced. Techniques on how best to control project execution are then explored. These techniques include variance analysis, change management and progress reporting.
