Management training in Africa has its roots in the colonial period, when European colonial powers sought to train local administrators to support governance and economic activities. However, this early training was mostly limited to lower-level skills and administrative functions, with leadership roles predominantly reserved for expatriates. After African countries gained independence in the mid-20th century, the need for indigenous management expertise became critical for developing newly formed governments and economies. 

The 1960s and 1970s saw the establishment of local business schools and institutions aimed at developing management skills, such as the University of Ghana Business School (established in 1960), NCMD and its operational arm, the Centre for management Development (established in 1973, the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (1973). the Lagos Business School in Nigeria (1991) and many more since then. Many African governments and organizations also began partnering with Western institutions to foster management education. 

By the 1990s, management training in Africa expanded, driven by globalization and the rise of the private sector. There was an increasing focus on entrepreneurship, leadership, and professional development. International organizations like the African Development Bank, the World Bank, and various NGOs also played key roles in providing training programs and resources.
